Is a CVT Transmission Reliable?

Yes — CVTs are reliable when serviced correctly using the right parts and fluid. Many leading vehicle manufacturers have already adopted CVT technology, and it is expected to become more common across a wide range of models, including 4WDs, within the next five years.

In the past, CVTs in imported vehicles from Japan received poor servicing, which led to early failures. A common issue was the use of incorrect oil, such as Dexron II or III, which damaged the internal belt and caused transmission failure. These issues were caused by a lack of understanding and access to correct parts — not by the CVT technology itself.

Today, with the right servicing, a CVT can deliver excellent performance, fuel savings, and long-term durability.
