FAQs
Whether you're unsure about service intervals, fluid types, or repair options, this section is designed to provide clear and practical information to help you make informed decisions.
How often should I service my CVT transmission?
Can other transmission shops repair CVTs?
Can a CVT be repaired?
Yes. We specialise in CVT repairs and offer fixed-price services for most common vehicles. This ensures transparency and no unexpected costs.
What if my insurance limit does not cover the full repair?
In many cases, we can tailor the repair to fit within your policy limit, so you would only need to pay the excess.
What is the average cost of a full CVT repair?
Most repairs range from $3,200 to $5,900 NZD including GST. This covers removal, repair, and refitting. Vehicle pick-up is available in the North Island at an extra cost. Some cars have special conditions that apply.
Is there a filter that should be replaced?
Yes. Some CVT transmissions have internal filters, some have external filters, and some have both. These should be replaced as part of regular servicing.
How reliable is a CVT?
CVTs are reliable when properly maintained. Regular servicing and using the correct fluid are key to long-term performance. See our warning page for details.
Can I tow with a vehicle that has a CVT?
Light towing is generally fine. If you tow heavier loads regularly, such as a boat or caravan, we recommend fitting an additional oil cooler to protect the transmission.
Can I install a second-hand CVT?
What kind of oil should I use in my CVT?
Always use the CVT fluid recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer or supplied by CVT NZ 2010 Ltd. Avoid aftermarket oils, as they often do not meet the required specifications.
Note:Â The Nissan Skyline GT350 with an Extroid CVT must only use Nissan KTF Fluid (part #KLE51-00004).
