Is a CVT transmission reliable?

Yes, it is very reliable and I believe it will be the transmission of the future.

More and more Car manufacturers are using it in their new vehicles and in the next 5 years  you will see many more makes and models with a CVT transmission fitted. You also will see them more in 4WD vehicles.

CVT Transmissions have had a bad reputation in the past. The horror stories develop when CVT transmissions start playing up and sometimes even lose drive completely. The cause of these problems often arose in vehicles that were imported from Japan and sold in New Zealand.  Workshops in New Zealand started servicing these cars without realising they were fitted with CVTs.  They changed the oil and after a period the transmission failed.  A broken belt was most often the problem.  The dealers could not supply parts at that stage to repair this, so a lot of second hand units were fitted. The workshops used Dexron II and Dexron III to service the transmission and the problem recurred

CVTs are not built for extreme use or for racing purposes.

A CVT can save you several dollars in fuel consumption which is an advantage with the current trends in fuel prices.
